What can I expect from my first class?
During your first class, you'll go through basic warm-up exercises, learn foundational stances and movements, practice safe falling techniques & perform basic Aikido techniques in a step by step manner, all under the guidance of the head instructor and senior students.
How often should I train?
You can train as little or often as you like, but it is recommended you commit to at least two classes per week. This consistency will help you make steady progress and be ready for gradings. Additionally, attending both open-hand and weapon classes is highly beneficial to your aikido training.
Do I need to be fit?
Aikido is a martial art suitable for individuals of all ages and fitness levels. Our classes are thoughtfully designed to ensure safety and accessibility for participants of varying skill levels and physical abilities. Since Aikido emphasizes technique rather than physical strength, it accommodates people of all body types and strengths. Please inform your Aikido instructor of any injuries or health conditions before joining practice on the mat.
Do I need any prior martial arts experience?
No martial arts experience is necessary. Our dojo is open to all comers regardless of your skill level or background.
Can Aikido be used for self-defence?

Does Aikido have competitions?
Most Aikido schools do not hold competitions, and the Iwama Ryu style has no competitive aspect. Instead, our training emphasizes working together in a cooperative and respectful manner to mutually benefit each other’s technique. As a result, injuries are rare, and both partners learn how to throw and be thrown safely.
How long does it take to get a black belt?
On average, it takes about three years of consistent training, or roughly 1,000 classes, to achieve Sho Dan (1st Degree Black Belt). However, individual progress varies, as everyone learns at their own pace. Compared to other martial arts, Aikido typically requires more time to master and advance through the dan ranks. It's essential to focus not just on attaining ranks but on your personal journey of self-improvement and the values gained along the way.
